KINGSHIP
Malcolm
'I'll to England'
Flees to England when he hears his father has been murdered, this could show he is logical ad tactical as he knows people will suspect him. Although could also be seen as cowardly, since he deserts his county in its time of need
-
Birnam Wood disguise
Shows he has good tactics and his forward thinking, Able to control and lead a group to success.
-
Duncan
Shakespeare presents Duncan to be a kind and generous King, yet also fair. This is shown when he orders the execution of the previous Thane of Cawdor and praises Macbeth and Banquo. However Shakespeare also hints that Duncan is too trusting and forgiving, as he does not suspect the Thane of Cawdor or Macbeth.
Critique of Duncan
[Duncan] 'This castle hath a pleasant seat; the air / Nimbly and sweetly recommends itself / Unto our gentle senses'
Irony, as that night he is murdered in the castle by Macbeth
-
Religous imagery
-
[Macbeth] 'Besides, this Duncan / Hath borne his faculties so meek, hath been / So clear in his great office, that his virtues / Will plead like angels, trumpet-tongued, against / The deep damnation of his taking-off'
'God's annointed temple'
Macduff speaks of Duncan as if he is a saint. Fit in with the idea of the divine right of kings as the King was believed to be god's representative on earth.
Macbeth
Macbeth may have been a good, noble King if he had not intervened in fate. He is described as being as strong soldier and warrior at the beginning and noble. Shakespeare shoes the consequences of regicide and going against the divine right of Kings through Macbeth. Did this as King James I was afraid of being assassinated by his subjects, published one year after the gun powder plot
'bleed, bleed poor country'

-
-
It weeps, it bleeds; and each new day a gash/ is added to her wounds'
King of England
King Edward is mentioned as he can heal people by touching them. Shakespeare includes this to emphasise the divine right of Kings and how they are appointed by god. Edward had healing abilities, contrasts Macbeth who brings suffering and grief to his subjects
Banquo
Banquo acts a foil to Macbeth. He too is a captain in the army and the two are very good friends. However, Banquo does nothing to act on the prophecies whereas Macbeth goes on to murder many. he fights of the 3 murderers to allow his son to escape, showing his nobility as he thinks of his son first
"under him, / My Genius is rebuked"
-
-
'allegiance clear'
He is very loyal and will stay loyal to Macbeth, but he doesn't want to do anything that would go against God
