18) There are some words that similarity in the meanings, such as smile and sing, these words have a happy meaning while, cries and bleeding have a sad meaning.
19) To show how the mask shows happiness, he showed this as he said in his poem positive words such as sing and smile, while it hides the sorrows, this was indicated by the words that he said in his poem such as lies and bleeding.

In the poem the author uses personification when he said "We wear the mask that grins and lies" the mask is given human traits.
"With torn and bleeding hearts we smile," a hyperbole is used to exaggerate and place emphasis on the pain and suffering that the African Americans were subject to at this time.
In the poem, the masks symbolised emotions and how the african americans used to hide their emotions. the masks represented how they were hurt from the way they were treated.
