Chapter 2 & 3 Mindmap
Chapter 2.1
Input
An input device collects data from the outside world and changes it into a form that the computer can work with
Examples are: Keyboards, Mouses, Microphones etc...
Output
An output device communicates info from the computer to the user, info can be put out as sound (Speakers), visuals (Monitors) etc...
Storage
Before you turn off your computer , the documents you have been working with need to be stored for future use. There are secondary storage devices that can do this for you. Some examples of storage devices: Hard drives, USB
Power Supply
The many components that make up the computer system all need electricity to work. The power supply is a small box inside the computer case that ensures that power is supplied to each component in an appropriate form.
Ports
External devices such as keyboards, monitors or printers are often attached by a cable to a system box. The port is the interface, or point of attachment, to the system box.

Chapter 2.2
Controller Cards
Controller cards are often expansion boards that fit into slots in the motherboard. They include video cards, sound cards, network cards and modem cards. The video card which is also know as a graphics adaptor, converts computer output into a video signal that can sent through a cable, to display an image on the screen
Bus lines
In a typical desktop computer, the CPU and memory chips are attached to circuit boards, and data can pass between them along connecting channels or bus lines.
The Motherboard
The main item inside the system box is the motherboard and this houses a verity of components, including the all important chips.
Chips are collections of complex electronic circuits mounted on a wafer, or chip, of silicon.
Chapter 2.4
Troubleshooting
Troubleshooting is a systematic, step by step, elimination process for finding a system fault
Care and maintenance
-
Keep computer in an ideal environment (not too hot, humid and keep away from static electricity)

Chapter 2.3
Personal Computers
A computer that can perform its input, processing, output and storage activities by itself
Servers
A server can be any networked computer located anywhere that has appropriate server software installed
Smartphones
Smartphones have increased in popularity as they now provide many more functions than just phone services
Mainframe Computers
Mainframe computers can cost up to several million dollars. They can store vast amounts of data and are accessed with terminals or personal computers.
Microprocessors
Tiny electrical circuits made up of millions of transistor switches, mounted on a silicon chip, that controls the flow of signals
Supercomputers
A supercomputer is the fastest and most expensive of all computers. Supercomputers will contain thousands of processors that can share jobs and work in parallel.
