Definition: A research literature review is a systematic, explicit and reproducible method of identifying, evaluating, and synthesizing the existing body of completed and recorded work produced by researchers, scholars and practitioners.
Steps
- Select the bibliographic databases to conduct the research
- Identify the key terms reflective of the topic/problem of interest to use in the search for the literature
- Locate suitable sources for review: journal articles, conference papers, dissertations, reports, books
- Read through and critically evaluate the identified sources for quality and suitability to the topic
- Organize the selected sources by abstracting them, taking notes and developing a literature review map.
- Produce a descriptive review of the literature for the topic
