Space and the solar system
The planets
Mercury
Planet closest to the sun. Looks grey/yellow . Smallest planet in the solar system
Venus
Second planet to the sun. Appears deep yellow. Contains toxic air, extreme heat and high pressure
Earth
Third planet from the sun. Looks green, blue and white. Only planet with life on it.
Mars
Fourth planet from the sun. Looks red. Known as the red planet
Jupiter
Fifth planet from the sun. First of the gas giants. Largest planet in the solar system.
Saturn
Sixth planet from the sun. Looks beige/yellow with a large ring. The ring is made from rock, dust, and ice.
Uranus
Seventh planet from the sun. Looks light blue. Uranus is tilted at an angle of 98 degrees.
Neptune
Eighth planet from the sun. Looks deep blue. It is the most dense gas planet
Pluto
Pluto is a dwarf planet, ninth from the sun
Space objects
Natural objects
A natural object in space is called a natural satellite
Meteors. These are burning chunks of rock that flies around in space. They create streaks of light when they pass earth and are also known as shooting stars.
Comets. These are pieces of dust and ice that orbit the sun
Asteroids. Chunks of rock that greatly range in size. Can be found in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
Man-made objects
Man-made objects are called artificial satellites. We can see most of these from Earth with our own eyes.
ISS. The International Space Station is a man-made object that orbits the Earth. You can see it when it passes your country. It appears as a bright, large star
Satellites. Satellites are put into space my humans to try and find out more about space. On a clear night, you can see some of them from your house.
