Peoples Action Party (PAP)
- wanted independence
- they were socialists (basic needs are settled, how hard you work --> more money)but anti- communist (everyone gets equal wages)
- wanted to represent the people
- they formed an alliance with the trade unions as they would not have been able to gather the support of the chinese (70% of singapores population) without them. After PAP had won the elections they kicked the communions out.

- one of the first issues they had to solve was the anti- ns riots.

The colonials
- believed in capitalism
- wanted to maintain the status quo
- wanted to protect the british's interests so they gradually transferred institutions to the local people through elections
- they helped shape the way Singapore is currently governed
The communists
- believed in communism, anti- capitalists
- capitalism breeds inequality, harms the masses
- wanted the colonial government out of SG.
- infiltrated the workers union
- created class consciousness and struggle against the wealthy
The workers
- wanted higher wages and better working conditions to provide for their families
- many of them supported trade unions as they protected their rights.
Chinese middle school students
- wanted equality & were anti- colonialist
- many of them supported trade unions with notable personalities like Lim Chin Song and Fong Swee Swan (former student leaders)

Maria Hertogh Riots
- challenged british authority
- questioned if the british even cared about their interests
Anti-NS riots
- challenged british as a government
- british did not let the chinese complete education and find jobs in SG
Hock Lee Bus Company Riots
- challenged british superiority
- locals and communists blamed british govt for their inability to protect workers' rights
Nation vs State
nation
- people have a common identity and are usually seen with multiculturalism.
- people know each other's religions, norms, traditions and languages.
state
- has geographical territories.
- people have authority (power) and sovereignty (freedom) in a state.
