13.Detailed Procedures of Group Brainstorming
If possible, keep rotating different brain stormers as people get use to their fellows in the same group after some time and the familiarity douse the fire.
Include females in the brainstorming panel. Girls try to "out-ideate" the men and vice versa. This tends to induce an extra rivalry which stimulates the flow of ideas.
Avoid "big boss" personalities in these sessions. They slow down the idea flow a lot.
A chairperson who leads the discussion and a vice chair who is the main idea collector/documenter.
The ideas produced by group brainstorming should always be screened and otherwise processed at later conferences. Preferably by participants other than those who have thought up these ideas.
The purpose of these follow up conferences are to judge and evaluate the ideas and they are not brainstorming sessions.
Five is a good number
Leader of the brainstorming session should be trained to lead and to be able to quickly explain what brainstorming is and sets out to do for the newbies.
Leader need to set up the problem in a simple way. See if the problem can be broken down into even simpler problems. Problems should not be umbrellas.
Leaders can prepare some of their own suggestion first. This is not to show off but to act as a "start the ball rolling" mechanism.
Display the rules of brainstorming prominently at the session.
Only one idea at a time
If several ideas are generated, each contributor should jot down their own ideas quickly before being absorbed by other s' ideas.
Number the ideas so to show that each is important.
Do not attach names of contributor to any ideas
Give sufficient time, superficial solutions tend to be offered first. Deeply thought out ideas need time to be manifested in ones' brain.
Leader should ask participants to keep the problem on their minds till the next day. Let the sub conscious do the work.
