background
- 1943- 1950
- Maria Hertough was adopted by a malay during the Japanese occupation as her parents couldn't take care for her.
- Maria, whose muslim name was Nadra, grew up under Malay customs. She lived with Aminah for 8 years.
- After the occupation, her biological parents wanted her back but Aminah refused and it eventually turned into a court case.
- During the trials, Aminah allowed Maria to get married to Mansoor adabi at the age of 13 which led to the British favouring the Hertogough's during the court case.
- Many people thought that the British were siding with The Hertoughs as they were "white" and that they were discriminating the malay customs and culture.
- Maria was legally married under islamic law but under European law only those above the age of 16 were allowed to get married. This caused the British to side with the Hertoughs as it was seen that Aminah was mistreating Maria.
