The Prestige
Narrative
1.Circular narrative structure, rather than linear. Film starts near the end, and circles back. Flash forwards, and flashbacks.
2.Two protagonists, given equal screen-time. The audience’s sympathies move from one to the other throughout the film.
3.First person narration from both protagonists (from their diaries) moves the story forward, giving the audience extra information.
4.They are both unreliable narrators.
Narrative mimics a magic trick, by keeping the audience guessing, and using misdirection, leading to a big reveal.
Multiple plot twists
Representation
Alfred Borden (Bale)
Is a magician. His facial expressions are often serious. He wears ordinary, low quality clothes. He has a thick working class London accent.Single-minded magician, obsessed at being the best. His ambition and hubris result in the death of Angier’s wife during a magic trick.-old-hearted, distant, threatening and dangerous.
Robert Angier (Jackman)
He is also a magician. He is generally cheerier, and more of a showman. His clothes are generally more stylish. He has a less strong accent.
After the death of his wife at the hands of Borden, he becomes obsessed with destroying Borden and/or his career, and becoming a better magician than Borden.
Olivia (Johansson)
A magician’s assistant. She is young, and physically attractive. She wears revealing costume.she is objectified towards the start of the film, due to her costume, lack of dialogue on stage, and secondary nature.
However she uses her intellect to play both magicians off against each other, outsmart and double-cross both of them.
