Montgomery Alabama
1956
58% white, 42% black
50% of black men were domestic servants
60% of black women in domestic service
Bus company only employed white people
whites had front, blacks had back but had to give up their seat
3) Rosa Parks
seamstress at a department store
member of NAACP
1/12/1955
told to give up her seat on bus and refused
police called +was arrested
told to appear in court on 5/12
E.D.Nixon wanted to use her case to fight segregation
4) Boycott
WPCM run by Robinson
issued 35,000 leaflets about the boycott
ministers supported the boycott in their sermons
King was made president of the Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA)
Parks found guilty and charged $10
5) Boycott continued
E.D.Nixon pushed Parks case to continue until they got justice
Boycott continued until they got what they wanted
black people to be employed as bus drivers
all drivers to be polite to all passengers
seats to fill on a first come first served basis
Boycott continued for 381 days
6) Churches Contribution
bought cars to carry people to work and school
30,000 raised from car pools
taxis originally lowering prices to bus ticket price
city officials enforced old law stating that taxi rates must be above 42c
couldn't get insurance in the US
ended up getting insurance from Llyods in England

89 charged with old law against boycotting (Feb 1956)
KKK poured acid on cars involved in car pool
white employers who originally brought their employees to work were threatened to stop
Kings front porch was bombed almost killing his daughter
E.D.Nixon's house was bombed
8) Effect
20th December 1956
High courts ruling of segregation in buses being unconstitutional came into effect
boycott finally ended
Jan 10th 1957
4 churches + 2 homes bombed
still hatred + segregation
was a stepping stone towards full independence
