pathophysiology
-
-
7-9 days after onset of fever, an influx of neutrophils occurs and other immune cells
secrete cytokines and MMP which target endothelial cells and results in fragmentation of internal elastic lamina and vascular damage
in severely affected vessels, the media develops inflammation with necrosis of sm ms cells. The internal and external elastic lamina can split, leading to aneurysms.
