Types of briefs
Negotiated
This is when two or more media organisations work together on a brief, they both have a say and they can have conflicting ideas and opinions.
A disadvantage is that it could be very difficult to negotiate a brief that is accepted by all parties.
Advantages include more ideas and more chance of creativity being optimised and costs may be minimised due to each party having a specialist skill that they can bring.
Informal
A major advantage is that because there are likely to be very little rules to follow the production company can have near unlimited creative freedom.
A major disadvantage is that these types of briefs are risky as there’s no written documents to support it.
-
Co-operative
An advantage is that there can be higher levels of creativity as there are multiple perspectives and people working on a brief. Another advantage is that it can take considerably less time to complete a brief if there’s more then one company working together on the brief..

-
Contractual
A contractual brief is when a client and a production company enters an agreement to produce a media text with pre-agreed condition and a set fee.
-
A disadvantage is that if a company fails to deliver on its promises it could face fines or legal action. Another disadvantage is that it can be very expensive to draw up a contract.
-
Commission
An advantage is that the company can ask for a higher price as there is likely a reason why the client chose that company, most likely for a specialist skill the company has.
A disadvantage is that as there are two media companies they may have differing opinions on how the brief should be done.
A commissioned brief is where a larger media company has actively gone to find a specific company and given them a brief to work on for them.
Tender
Clients will advertise a brief and a production company will put together a proposal that they then pitch to the client. Multiple companies can propose a pitch, which gives the client a choice to choose to pick from.
Advantages are that client will be able to look at many different at ideas for their product form different companies, giving multiple perspectives allowing them to produce their product to the highest standard .
Disadvantages are that it’s hard to gain work as it's extremely competitive. There are also similar disadvantages seen with a competition brief.
Competition
Some advantages are that the clients only have to pay the winning production company instead. Also multiple production companies’ means that the client has a large choice of products to chose from to pick what they believe will be most successful.
A disadvantages is that companies that are turned down by the client may become disheartened as they have missed out on potential work and money.
Client can put their brief out so it can be accessed by all, the different production companies can then chose to enter and compete and they will be judged on which company has the best entry.
