CHARLES I
PRISONER
-
-
2nd war didn't last long - parliament met to discuss what to do with Charles - 240/286 supported him - should be given another chance
At the next meeting the 240 supporters were prevented from entering Parliament by Oliver Cromwell's men.
-
TRIAL
-
-
John Bradshaw led the trial - he wore a metal lined haat during the trial - ?in case someone tried to shoot or attack him
Charles was charged with
Burning, Damage and Desolation caused by the war
-
-
-
-
-
A number of witnesses were heard making ridiculous statements - "I saw Charles stick his banner in the ground at Nottingham in 1642 therefore the war was his fault"
on day 7 of the trial only 68 Judges turned up - Charles wasn't allowed to speak - Bradshaw read out the false statement and then the sentence
He was sentenced to death - by "severing of his head from his body" - only 59 Judges signed the death warrant (started with 135, ended with only 59 - they were not convinced)
EXECUTION
-
-
-
Delayed - first executioner wouldn't do it, 38 others refused. Eventually 2 agreed to do it wearing disguises
One clean chop - he had tucked his hair into his cap to make sure it was a clean cut - the crown groaned when it happened
