Life-Cycle Assessment
Any design decision and solution that an optimum is looked for and a balance drawn between cost and benefit
Balancing needs against the impact of the environment is becoming increasingly more difficult - as manu. strive to develop new products and processes
Life Cycle assessment is a technique widely used to assess and evaluate the impact of product or package from 'cradle to grave'
- Raw materials - extraction, what energy is needed?
- Materials Processing - refinement/bauxite to aluminium, energy needed?
- Part manufacture - what materials, energy needed?
- Assembly - transportation to assembly line AND from the production line, energy needed?
- Product's use - energy it uses (standby), emissions?
- End of use - landfill? 4 Rs? transport to end destination?
Life Cycle Inventory
Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of environmental issues - expect companies to pay attention to environmental impact of product
-
LCI - describes which raw materials are used and what emissions will occur during the life of a product
Basis compiles a list of all the inputs and outputs of industrial processes that occur during the life cycle of product
- Environmental inputs and outputs of raw materials and energy resources
- Economic inputs and outputs of products of products, components or energy that are outputs from other processes
Can be expressed as a process tree where each box represents a process with defined in and outputs that forms part of the life cycle
Second stage of this process to interpret the data to access the overall environmental impact of product
