RAW Impact - What are the issues?
Bamboo
CCA and borax used to treat the timber - this can't be exposed to weather or water
No research into bamboo - have to figure out how to use it
Can't use screws as it's so fibrous (it splits), had to use threaded bolts
Cant be put straight into the ground
Only one company in Cambodia that treats for them
How does the bamboo go in the range of weather scenarios??
Shaping / bending: different species will bend, others can be heated to bend. Trying the make it and the process more efficient
Need to figure out processes for mass production of materials and all aspects of the build - machinery?
Funding
Funded by schools that come over
Each student raises $1000 for RAW
Engages with the people who are helping to build
Building companies can send money
Spreading word and raising awareness
Don't have unlimited funds!! Grand plans don't always come to fruition due to lack of money
Every piece matters project
Government relocating 113 local families
Had to buy big machines
Machines are not high quality and need constant maintenance
Agreements needed with families for debt relief and housing. Fostering sense of empowerment
Fighting against time to get the clearing done before rainy season
3.5m below safe flood levels. In a wet season it will be 3.5m below water. Currently building a retaining wall to try to keep the water out (building it out of dirt)
Need to work out how to get the houses 3.5m off the ground, how to keep water out.
Housing designs
Reliant one one/two people coming up with the original designs
Work with Uni of NSW
Didn't use all the designs as some were unrealistic
Work with an architect
Is this actually going to work??
Building design: lots of issues that need to be sorted
Weather
Rain season is pretty different to Aus!
Do the designs of the houses meet the range of weather scenarios??
Diseases in the area?
People power
Do you ever have trouble getting people involved?
What do you need help with?
What are the primary things you would challenge Aus school students with?
Working with other NGOs - it does need to be a good fit though
Designing new processes, that can increase efficiency of the build but also create jobs for locals on the ground?
The way we see life is completely different to the locals. Can be a long time to get thorugh to each other
Building trust with Cambodians is difficult due to a range of issues
Recruiting cambodian staff to help build trust and empower the locals. Eg Dani the social worker working with the locals.
Hand up, not hand out
Inherent issues with building a house and giving to a family
Could they turn around sell the house, and move back to the slum - to relieve debt
Attitudes: sense of entitlement, not wanting to create a reliance on RAW
Building wells for drinking water, the water is pretty clean but has a little bit of arsenic in it. Mostly use bought in water to drink
Current issues we're working on:
Bamboo treatment
Fixing up houses that were previously built (water leaks)
Buildling design issues - need new designs
How can we change our designs that are still practical for school students to be involved in building.
Refigure building design to meet all stakeholders: school students, locals, money, sustainability
Natural render?? For the inside, made of clay, lime and rice husks.
Bamboo: sun exposure causes cracks and deterioration. Issues in the treatment?
Environmental sustainability is always a goal. Eg. Rooves - would like to see thatched rooves made of natural products, but this creates issues with the water leaks
Life "Basics"?
No running water
Keeping bodies clean?
Drinking water?
Electricity?
Solar power
Hygiene??
Keeping food? They mainly eat a plant based diet at the moment!
