How is Greg's experience (and/or Tommy's experience) with Hollywood depicted in such a way as to send a message about the state of the movie industry at the time of the book's publication?
"You are going to learn the hard way, and the worst part of it is you had your parents to warn you, unlike all those loser Hollywood runaways you see in the streets" (15)
Greg's mother thought that acting career is not a good career choice because it is a really difficult industry that even the "most talented actors barely survive" (15)
-
-
context: This was the advice that Greg's mother before Greg left for Hollywood. It was her warning about Hollywood.

Tommy:"But let me tell you, coming to L.A. is not easy, my friend. But, you know, you take your time, you grow up." (85)
-
-
Tommy: "This is Hollywood. Everything is possible. If Hitchcock hear you talk like this, he would fire you on the spot" (96)
-
-
Greg: "I came to Los Angeles to do a big movie. SOmething with a huge impact, like Interview with a Terminator. I was here now, and I could make it happen."(103)
Greg made it seem like it was the place to be in Hollywood & that his dreams are possible in Hollywood

Seth(guy behind Kinko's while taking headshots): "In this town you've got to rely on yourself; you've got to be your own agent. You've got a good agent, year, but your want to be doing a lot of the busywork" (110-111).
-
Greg thought is was kind of weird how Seth was giving Greg all this advice. It seemed like he was too nice.
context: Greg went to the Kinko's to take head shots for his auditions and Seth just happen to be an aspiring actor as well. Seth was giving Greg advice. Greg was weirded out.
When Greg was auditioning for the Puppet Master Role, the people were really mean to him. They didn't expect much from him and saw him as a nobody (115-116).
this shows that the Hollywood industry is hard for someone new to the industry. People are not very welcoming when you first start out.

People left Tommy's production and wanted a paycheck. Tommy replied that this was all "nonesense", that in Hollywood this was "how things work" (157)
-
-
Greg: "My mom couldn't figure out why, after doing a movie, I wasn't already a big star" (176)
it takes a lot of time to become a big star, it's not just a one movie thing, it takes more than that
-
Sometimes great actors are not recognized the first time. It takes several awards before they are accepted as a great actor.
Tommy was furious that Hollywood would not accept him, so he made his own Hollywood movie about himself (189)
this is kind of sad because in order to make himself a Hollywood star, he had to make his own movie and star himself
-
This is the reason why "The Room" is a movie. If Hollywood people allowed him to act, then he probabyl wouldn't have made this movie.
This tells the story of a person who was trying to make it big in Hollywood. IT can help with takling about the hardships of being there.
