Higher levels of light
faster rate of photosynthesis
Different colours of light
Red
Green
Blue
Most photosynthesis
Least photosynthesis
some photosynthesis
Respiration
Oxygen in, Carbon dioxide out
Happens mostly during the night (absence of light)
Photosynthesis happens when there is light
Photosynthesis takes priority
It is more effective and efficient
Produced by photosynthesis
Absorbed by chlorophyll in chloroplasts
found in palisade layer of the leaf
Equations:
Word equation:
carbon dioxide + water ---> glucose + oxygen
Symbol equation:
6(CO2) + 6(H2O) ---> C6H12O6 +6(O2)
Carbon dioxide in, Oxygen out
Product of photosynthesis
Chlorophyll
Required for photosynthesis
Pigment that turns leaf green
Some plants have less chlorophyll than others
Turns to starch for storage
Testing for starch
Boil the leaf
This makes the leaf softer and breaks down the cell membrane
Boil in ethanol
This breaks down the leaf and removes the chlorophyll so there is no pigment left in the case of a colour change
Wash leaf in cold water
This softens the leaf some more as the ethanol made it very brittle it also helps to get water into the plant cells so the iodine will diffuse much more easily
Add iodine solution
tests to see whether there is any starch in the leaf
why test for starch?
To see if a plant is properly carrying out photosynthesis
Test for chlorophyll
