The nation of islam believed in black supremacy. Malcolm X was islamic. Many african americans converted.

Rosa Parks
Rosa Parks was an African American woman that helped end segregation. By not giving up her seat and standing for her rights she started a movement by all african americans to stop using public transportation. After hurting the economy the laws on segregated buses went away and that was the first step to equality.

Birmingham riots
After a bombing attack on an african american church riots broke out in Birmingham for equality and peace. They were met with firehoses, dog, and police beating them. it really opened the eyes to the world of how bad african americans were being treated.

Little Rock 9
The first african american students to enter a white school. After being met with the national Guard and being forced not to enter. The president order an army unit to escort them in and protect them for the whole school year.

Selma
A 5 day march led by Dr Martin Luther King Jr to protest equal rights. It went from Selma to Montgomery Alabama.

Sit-ins
A method of non violent protest by the african americans. They would sit in white only areas and sit there until they were served. Facing violent people and being dragged out by the police, they remained peaceful and made the white people look dump on tv leading to the eye opening of how inhuman whites were treating them.

Freedom Summer
A gathering of hundreds of african americans and whites to non violently protest voting rights. It led to voting rights but many people wear beaten and few were killed by the local police and KKK members.

Freedom Riders
Groups of blacks and whites that would ride around to different cities and protest equal rights. Often met with violence and even killed.

March on Washington
A march consisting of over 200,000 people to protest for equal jobs and freedom.
