What was childhood like in Sparta?
What are the differences between Spartan Boys and Girls?
Unlike other greek states they were free to roam around outside their houses.
Diamastigosis
Girls were not sent for training but they were supposed to learn and get educated about physical knowledge. First to make it mandatory to educate woman (Physical like mens too) = City state = main priority
Girl = Arts, music, dance, reading and writing
Boys train to be soldier
Sports like boys to keep fit
Boys sent to barracks at age of 7 = away from family
Women were assigned husbands
Why are Spartan children
brought up the way
they were?
Little clothing = Diffrent Temp. and war situation
Encouraged Stealing to improve stealth
poorly fed = used to a battle and war situation = used to hunger and less food
Diamastigosis = ritual = whip teenage boys in front of altar (Common to die) so they could elimanate weak people.
They were encouraged throughout their life that their main purpoes of living is serving the nation
The baby was bathed in wine rather than water, to see its reaction to know if it is weak or not.
Sent to barracks at 7 = City State more inmportant then family/get used to being away from family
wrestling, gymnastics, were taught to fight, and endurance of other physical training done with girls as strong girls were thought to make strong childrent
If Infant (BOY or Girl) = weak = stranded in mountain because they want people who are strong enough to defend the city-state and be strong warriors
If they passed citezen test they were assigned husband which means only strong woman = baby and strong woman = stron baby so sparta has only strong babies
What was their job/expectations?(What they were Supposed to do?)
City state > Family (City state is more inmportant the Family)
Boys train from age 7 to be soldier by age of 20
Milllitary and Sparta = Main Priority of Citizen more inmportant then family
How did Child Rearing (Technique and how they did it) affect the future of Sparta and the kids ?
poorely fed = condition of war
Mentally sharp = use haeds in war and Physically stron = defend state and emotionally ressiliant = cope up with loos of family and friends asn living away from them.
Allowed to marry but not live = city state more inmportant then family. Only equals allowed to live with family
Sent to barrack, away from family at age of 7 to be soldier so they can defend city state by age of 20 and get used to be away from family
LIttle clothing so they are use to war situation
If infant is weak or sick it is left to die in the mountains . Since birth the NO. 1 priority = stregnth or else death
Encouraged Stealing as they had to learn stealth for war and stealing supplies
Harsh Physical pain to make them Strong
Moms not allowed to spend much time with baby because they can make baby less strong and fierce with their love!!
Only strong people had a future like marriges and a life itself.
