Digital Humanities and the Library
History of Digital Humanities
Computing and humanities
Big data
Tools for analysis are more available/more tutorials for non-technical people
Easy-to-learn tools, access to processing speed/power for individuals without needing to justify computing time to administration
Social media analysis, crowdsourcing, free content management sites
Humanities Research and the Library
Libraries have always played a part in scholarly research
Some of the recent digital humanities work is being done first by libraries (digitization, etc.)
Digital Humanities' Perspectives on Libraries
Sometimes see them as service providers instead of partners
Alternatively, they can be great partners on very interesting, useful projects
Don't always know how libraries provide resources - can assume they have more authority than they do
Libraries can provide support for a project that one faculty member alone might not get
Libraries' Perspectives on Digital Humanities
Having extra projects for faculty can be frustrating if they do not come with an increase in funding or there is a sudden addition of extra tasks
Can be difficult to justify such projects to institutions
Librarian may have to borrow staff members from other departments to complete projects that may or may not be successful
Enthusiasm about projects does not guarantee cooperation from faculty
Projects may not show desired results/can be hard to justify continued funding
Many libraries are already doing similar projects, participating more openly in field is a benefit, brings in more connections and opportunities
Proposed Solutions/Models
Libraries should focus on user needs over providing the latest project/tools without checking if it would be used
If a digital humanities fit a library's goals and needs, they should conduct the project or program themselves
Find existing digital humanities projects on campus and get involved
Collaboration is important and useful in digital humanities
Keep informed of nation/international projects and initiatives for digital humanities
