Groupthink
Janis's model (1972)
Groupthink is way of thinking in highly cohesive groups which desire to reach unanimous agreement and overrides motivation to consider rational decision making processes

Real world examples
Bay of Pigs- experts including JFK saw Cuba as threat and planned to neutralize them by sending soldiers but bad decision as they were defeated - because JFK was overbearing leader there were symptoms of group think: norm was not to challenge, started discussions by stating his view
Cuban Missile Crisis - same group but positive outcome , used ways of preventing group think : welcomed open discussion, JFK didn't state opinion , split into 2 groups, sought expert opinions and devil's advocate
Worst aviation disaster, crews poor decision to set off in fog lead to plane crash.
Showed symptoms of Groupthink
Leadership: norm was not to challenge pilot, who was an experienced and influential leader.
Illusion of unanimity: pilot thought crew supported his decision
Decisional stress- max hours nearly up before paying to transfer passengers

Challenger disaster- space shuttle exploded, NASA team knew of problem but decided to launch anyway
Causes: cohesive group- worked together long time, respected each other. Leadership- managers were pro-launch . Isolation - engineers were bullied out of decision making process
Symptoms : perceived invulnerability- NASA managers though O-ring was safe and wanted engineers to disprove it. Rationalisation- thought logical to launch. Also self-censorship, mind-guarding, desicisional stress, illusions of morality
