"Shylock might seem evil on the outside, but he is evil because of the circumstances he was forced into.
For example, when Shylock says “I will feed fat the ancient grudge I bear him”, it makes people think that he is thirsty for revenge and ready to kill him. However, when he says this quote,“He hath disgraced me and hindered me half a million, laughed at my losses, mocked at my gains, scorned my nation, thwarted my bargains, cooled my friends, heated mine enemies”, his actions become more justifiable and most people would have done the same if they were him. Thus, this is an example of Appearance VS Reality in the Merchant Of Venice.
