Strategies to manage housing shortage
Slum Upgrading
cities try to improve conditions in slum areas by improving the quality of housing and basic services such as water, electricity and sewerage.
Sites may be cleared and basic infrastructure can be provided to the areas
Financing schemes and assistance are also provided to fund the projects
Self help schemes
Involve the participation of low-income households to improve conditions of existing housing
Governments do not provide housing directly, but instead provide assistance in other forms such as:
providing construction materials
providing basic services
People can continue to stay in the houses
Residents work on building the houses at a pace that is feasible for them
The rate of construction might be slower because many residents can only work the houses in their free time:
after work
during weekends
Reduces construction costs
Training also need to be provided to equip residents with the skills to build their houses
Uncertain success due to residents possibly selling construction materials provided by the government
If succssful
Services such as piped water systems and rooftop water tanks would be provided to houses of residents
electricity could be made available
Residents would have access to proper sanitation facilities like toilets and sewers
Infrastructure of house would be better, better materials
Provision of public housing
Refers to government efforts to provide housing units with basic services, usually for low-income households and other persons of need such as the elderly and disabled
New apartments are built
Old flats are rented at a low price
Abandoned buildings are converted for residential use
Reasonably priced compared to private housing, and may be subsidised by the government
Inclusive housing
Affordable housing
housing that is priced at a reasonable cost such that residents still have enough money for other basic needs, such as food.
Additional housing grant
Ethnic integration policy
Facilities and amenities

Elderly wellness stations
Senior activity centres
Children

Adults
Adult fitness corners
Strong sense of belonging
