Interwar years - 1919-1939 - Part 5
What caused the Munich conference ?
Why did the conference happen ?
Hitler wanted the Sudetenland and was willing to fight Czechoslovakia for it, Chamberlain wanted to avoid war at all costs so st up a conference.
Why did Hitler want the Sudetenland ?
It was taken from them in the Treaty of Versailles so it had lots of German inhabitants.
It had good industrial strength and strong weaponry.
The Czech defense was based there so it would massively weaken them.
How did Britain and France react ?
Britain was thrilled with itself, Chamberlain was seen as a hero for supposedly "preventing a war".
France was also still quite confident as they had "The Maginot line" which was seen as the ultimate defense system.
What were the events of the conference ?
Hitler promised the Sudetenland was the last territorial demand he would make in Europe and argued it was a mainly German speaking country.
Chamberlain partially agreed and felt the German speaking parts should go to Hitler.
However, Hitler isn't fully happy with this so he requests for the whole thing and threatens violence.
Chamberlain asks Mussolini to help get Hitler to come to a conference where they can discuss the land without violence.
Britain, France, Germany and Italy meet for a conference and give the land to Germany, Hitler promises he will not go to war with Britain. The Czech's were not invited to this conference.
The Nazi -Soviet pact
Why did Russia sign it ?
It meant Germany and Russia wouldn't go to war.
It meant Russia got half of Poland.
Why did Germany sign it ?
It meant that they could invade Poland without a threat from Russia.
It ensured Hitler could focus on the war and not have to worry about Russia (who were a large threat to Germany before).
