MICRO-ORGANISMS
HIV/AIDS
-
No cure for AIDS but antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) can help your body by slowing down the rate at which the HIV reporoduces
-
The diseases that attack your body when the immune system is weak are called opportunistic infections (e.g. cancer, pneumonia, TB)
-
Eventually there are too few immune cells left to protect your body against disease so HIV infected person becomes very ill
Theses viruses spread through your bloodstream and invade more immune cells turning them into factories too

-
Bacteria
-
-
-
-
Have the ability to live in habitats that are usually too harsh for other organisms (deep under the ocean, near volcanic vents)
-
Some can be used to create medicine to kill other micro-organisms or stop them from growing (antibiotics)
others can cause diseases (e.g. TB, food poisoning and cholera)
-
Viruses
-
Can invade plant and animal cells but some will attack other micro-organisms like bacteria and protists
-
Responsible for many diseases in humans (e.g. chicken pox, the flu and AIDS)
