URBAN LAND USE
DEFENSIBLE SPACE
suggests that individuals will claim OWNERSHIP and will take RESPONSIBILITY for territory that is marked with a clear BOUNDARY e.g a wall or fence
-
- a family's claim to a territory DECREASES as the number of families sharing the spade INCREASES
- the LARGE the number of people sharing a communal area, the more DIFFICULT it is for people to identify with it or to control the activity taking place in it
RESIDENTIAL AREAS
the land around a dwelling may be classified as private, semi-private, public or semi-public
- a detached house: the back garden is PRIVATE but the front garden is SEMI-PRIVATE as it can be accessed from the street.
- a high rise apartment block: the only PRIVATE areas are the individual flats. the corridors are SEMI-PUBLIC or sometimes PUBLIC
-
DEINDUSTRIALISATION
-
in MEDCs this left a scar on the landscape because;
- buildings were left DERELICT and RUN DOWN.
- the RELOCATION of industries led to mass UNEMPLOYMENT and a cycle of deprivation
- it opens up opportunities for the area to be REGENERATED and REDEVELOPED
- HOWEVER due to past industries it can be COSTLY as land may need to be DECONTAMINATED and CLEANED
it can create opportunities for new TERTIARY and QUATERNARY services such as TOURISM and research projects. this can help increase disposable income within an area and lead to a stronger ECONOMY
BROWN/GREEN FIELD SITES
WHY ARE BROWNFIELD SITES SUSTAINABLE?:
- often inner city developments = less traffic
- greenfield sites are protected
- economically more sustainable
- socially sustainable as restoration can preserve culture
- environmentally sustainable due to decontamination of land
- facilitates re-urbanisation
HOW CAN GREENFIELD SITES BE SUSTAINABLE?:
- planners can implement sustainable elements
- buildings can be eco-friendly e.g. carbon neutral
- neighbourhood units can be created
- built in a way that protects culture
- allow public transport to serve them = less traffic
- cheaper so it is available to more people
