Different types of force and their effects
Force of Gravity
pulls objects downwards
Magnetic force
can attract and repel objects
Electric force
electric force can pull objects
Force of Friction
can slow down objects
all surfaces are rough slowing movement of objects
a force that opposes the sliding motion of an object when in contact with another
advantages of friction
keep car wheels on ground when going around a corner, wet days car slips more
brake pad rubs against wheel slows bike
friction keeps your shoes
disadvantages
can get blisters on feet because foot rubs against shoe
car friction with air slows car down
soles of shoes wear away due to friction
reducing friction
special material reduce friction called lubricants, lubrication used to reduce friction between two surfaces in contact
bones are covered in fluid that acts as a lubricant
oil and grease used as lubricants in engines
Gravity as a force: Weight
weight
weight of an object is pull of the earth on it
weight is a force, measured in newtons
weight has a direction
weight gets smaller as you rise upwards from ground level
weight can chnage
mass
mass of an object is the amount of matter in it
measured in g or kg
does not have a direction, mass remains constant
weight found by multiplying mass x 10
value of weight can change
as objects rise pulling force of earth deacreases
earth has pulling force 400 km above surface
gravity force smaller on moon
Effect of force on spring
Hooke's law - the extension of an elastic body (a spring) is directly proportional to the force causing the extension
if force is too big spring over-stretched and lose elasticity this called exceeded its elastic limit
to investigate the relationship between the extension of a spring and the applied force
hang spring from end of rod, hang known weight from spring, measure extension, keep measuring extension and weight and graph
Force
causes stationary objects to move
can cause moving object to speed up, to slow down or to change direction
