Respiratory System
:
Function
Enables us to breath
Inhaling and exhaling air
Absorption of oxygen from the air to produce energy
Discharge of Carbon Dioxide
Parts
It is divided into two parts
Upper respiratory tract
Nose, mouth and beginning of trachea
Trachea
tube connecting throat to the bronchi
Bronchi
From the trachea into 2 smaller tubes
One to the left lung and one to the right
Lower respiratory tract
Trachea, bronchi, broncheoli and lungs
Broncheoli
Smaller tubes of bronchi
End up in the pulmonary alveolus
Pulmonary alveolus
Tiny air sacs delineated by a single-layer membrane
with capillaries at the end
Exchange of gases
Takes place in the membrane of
the pulmonary artery
Oxygen is absorbed into
the blood capillaries
Simultaneously, CO2 is transmitted from the
blood capillaries
It travels into the alveoli
Then through the bronchi
And up into the upper respiratory tract
Act of breathing
Inhalation
Intake of air into the lungs
through the expansion of
chest volume
Contraction of the diaphragm muscle
Causes the diaphragm to flatten
Contraction of the rib muscles
Causes the ribs to rise
Exhalation
The expulsion of air from the lungs
through the contraction of chest
volume
Muscles
Rib muscles
Diaphragm muscle
The
diaphragm
and
rib muscle
s
are constantly contracting and
relaxing
Air passes from the high pressure in
the lungs to the low pressure in the
upper respiratory tract
