Settlement increased at a rapid rate as people moved onto lands sold by the railroads, and the rail lines carried settlers to western parts of the state.
Towns grew up quickly near railroad stops, while commercial centers where several railroads connected boomed with business and industry.

Education
A 1914 law required children between the ages of 8 and 14 to attend school for at least 60 days a year.
