July 1953 - In order to overthrow Fulgencio Batista, Castro attacked the military barracks at Santiago de Cuba.

1955 - President Batista lets Fidel Castro out of jail, and Castro goes to see his brother in Mexico.

Literacy Campaign
Organized campaign in Cuba that was created in order to get rid of the illiteracy rate which had been rising.
1961 was known as the "year of education". During this year many schools were created and people were trained to become teachers.This was done in order to decrease the illiteracy rates among the peasants.
