Comparing and Contrasting Willingham, Anderson, and my beliefs
Willingham
He believes that you learn when you remember and in order to remember you have to think about something and pay attention. #
"Your memory is not a product of what you want to remember or what you try to remember, its a product of what you think about" (53).
-
-
Students' will think about the learning more when they are engaged. When students are thinking more they will learn more. #
Students are engaged through the teacher. When the teacher and students have a positive relationship and emotional bond, students will be engaged and therefore willl be more motivated to learn # #
Students are engaged through a well organized lesson. #
Students will not learn by making the "subject matter relevant to student' interests" (63). #
-
However, student interest can be used to help students understand the main ideas you want them to think about, but it doesn't motivate them to think about these ideas #
Anderson
-
-
Giving students choice has to be done in a certain way for it to be successful in helping students learn
-
Choice needs to be taught, not simply given
Students are engaged in learning when given choice. Choice should be given so that students stay engaged and learn. #
My Beliefs
-
-
People have a greater probability of remembering and learning something when they are engaged and I believe that it's ok to engage people through their interests and needs because it makes the learning more relevant to them. #
