AMINOGLYCOSIDES
indication
- Septicemia (gentamicin, amikacin)
- Abdominal and pelvic sepsis
• Bacterial endocarditis (gentamicin + penicillin)
• Tuberculosis, brucellosis
Topical uses (Neomycin)
- Conjunctival infection
- Infection of external ear
- Prior to bowel surgery (to reduce the intestinal flora)
Streptomycin
Indications :
• Serious form of tuberculosis
• Plague, brucellosis
• Subacute bacterial endocarditis
• Urinary and respiratory tract infections

Gentamicin
• Sensitive strains : bactericidal against pseudomonas, Proteus, Klebsiella, Enterobacter.
Acts synergistically with ampicillin, penicillin G, Ticarcillin, ceftriaxone, Vancomycin
• More nephrotoxic
Neomycin
Topical : infected burn, wound, ulcers

• Primarily against Gm –ve aerobic bacilli –
-Proteus, Pseudomonas
– E.Coli, enterobacter
– Klebsiella
– Shigella
Only few Gm +ve cocci:
– Staph aureus, Strepto viridans
Not effective against Gm +ve bacilli, Gm- ve cocci and anaerobes
