Higher amplitude means the wave has more energy, therefore a greater intensity.
Practicals
When you take all the particles out of a closed space,
(No particles left). Sound waves can't get through (You wouldn't be able to hear sound.)
Sound waves travel through solid particles quicker than liquid and gas particles because there is less space to for solid particles to vibrate amongst each other, so it's easier to pass the energy between them and are unlikely to miss.

How does the ear work.
The ear lobe or prima collects soundwaves. The soundwaves travel along the ear canal. When the waves reach the ear drum, the eardrum vibrates. Ossicles which are small bones amplify the vibrations. Electrical signals are made by the coachlea. The signal from the brain are taken by the auditory nerve.
