Several events happened in 1968. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, the TET Offense, LBJ would not run for re-election, Robert Kennedy was assassinated, and Chicago DNC. All of these events happened during the Civil Rights movement.

Nation of Islam 
This was founded by Malcolm X as a religion that he believed
was better for African Americans. Malcolm X believed that since Christianity was forced on African Americans that the Nation of Islam was a better religion.
Malcolm X 
Malcolm X was a Civil Rights leader who supported the Nation of Islam. He encouraged African Americans to break away from whites and to be proud of their heritage.
Black Power 
The Black Power movement encouraged African Americans to be proud of their heritage.
Many African Americans began to celebrate their culture proudly.
Black Panthers 
The Black Panthers were a group of African Americans that protected African Americans from police brutality. This is important because unlike most civil rights activists who were non violent the Black Panthers took a different approach.

Birmingham Riots This started off as a march and then white people started fighting and turned it into a riot. 
March on Washington Protesters marched in Washington D.C. to fight for racial equality.
