Procedure: real ppt sat 2nd from last, 123 American Male undergraduates, line perception task, 12/18 trials - confeds gave incorrect answers.
Findings: ppts wrong 37% of trials, 25% didn't conform, ppts said in interview it was due to compliance.
Conclusion: NSI --> compliance, 75% conformed at least once.

Procedure: sample was volunteers. He selected people he wanted and randomly allocated guard and prisoner roles- they were all good people before situation. State police arrested them to make it realistic. Participants were also strip searched.
Findings: lasted 6 days not 14 days. stopped due to extreme punishments- removed all rights for visitors, toilet breaks and meals. One left first day due to distress. One went on hunger strike. Zimbardo was a warden in mock prison as well as role of experimenter
Conclusion: the situation takes over the dispositional attributes. Both roles conformed to their roles. Also, the participants knew that what they were doing was wrong, however, they continued to conform to their roles, which suggests that they enjoyed their behaviour and power.
