Most men fought in the war on both sides, of course. In the Union, most soldiers were volunteers, leading up to 2.4million. The Confederate on the other hand, only had up to 1 million soldiers. The army mostly had Native Americans, African Americans, and Chinese Americans; along with white men. Only a fourth of the Union were from out of America.

Women during the Civil War would often disguise themselves as men just they could fight in the war. In the Union, they were nurses and cooks for both sides. The Confederate had less money, so the they would sew and cook for their boys and would heal their wounds; but rich women relied on their slaves to do all the work.

Some blacks joined the war on the confederate and even the union. They were also cooks, nurses, blacksmiths on both sides, the confederate refused to arm them but used them around the camps. But most slaves stayed slaves until the end of the war.

Agriculture was the main focus of South Carolina since colonial times.Large plantations were common across South Carolina. South Carolina is going to have more slave owners per 1000 people than any other state.However, the economic, social and political systems in South Carolina were based on the institution of slavery.In 1793 Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin and South Carolina farmers had a new cash crop. As a result they planted more cotton to increase profits and became even more dependent on slave labor.Although slave importation (international slave trade ) was outlawed in 1808, the slave population continued to grow in antebellum South Carolina.
