Enteric NS
runs entire GIT , cell bodies grouped into ganglia, two plexuses (myenteric and submucosal), functions are mixed in ganglia
Layers
mucosa, submucosal ganglia, plexus, circular muscle, longitudinal muscles
submucosal plexus in stomach but not ganglionated - ganglionated begins at pylorus -ganglionated myenteric plexus begins at upper esophageal sphincter
Extrinsic nerve supply
symp innervate whole length, parasymp primarily innervates upper (from vagus-esophagus, stomach , duodenum) and lower (sacral-colon, rectum, anus)

extrinsic primary afferents: dorsal root ganglion cell afferents run in splanchnic and pelvic nerve- functions/terminations of vagal and dorsal root afferents different
Functions
control movement of intestinal content, regulate water/electrolyte transport, control acid/mucous secretion, bicarbondate secretion
