Gastritis
(Irritation, inflammation and/or erosion of stomach lining)
Pathophysiology
Acute gastritis – injury of protective gastric mucosal barrier because of medications, alcohol, stress, ischemia etc. → mucosal hemorrhages, erosions, and ulcers
Chronic gastritis → progressive degeneration and thinning of gastric mucosa → gastric atrophy →loss of chief and parietal cells → diminish acid secretions → impair feedback mechanism (that inhibits gastrin secrion) → elevated plasma gastrin level → damage to intestinal epithelium.
