Autistic Savants
In what ways is being an autistic savant a disadvantage and an advantage?
There are many ways in which being an autistic savant can be beneficial. For example, Grandin says that there are various benefits.
"They can naturally do things no normal person can even be taught to do, no matter how hard he tries to learn or how much time he spends practicing." (Grandin 7)
This quote explains to us that autistic savants can do things other people can't normally do this is consider a benefit because they are original.
With being an autistic savant there are pros and cons in the work enviornment.
With being an autistic savant there are pros and cons in the work enviornment.)
The quote displays that being an autistic savant can also have its disadvantages , many people overlook your skills just for that fact that you are autistic. They don't give you the chance to demonstrate your skills.
There are pros and cons to being an autistic savant but it is interesting when you are able to demonstrate the outstanding skills you have and show things normal people can't usually do.
The evidence displays that by being an autistic savant there is an advantage over others becausee you have different skills that you excel at which in some career paths is beneficial.
What is the connection between autistic savants and animal intelligence?
Autistic savants and animals have a connection that not many people think about.
"Animals have special talents normal people don't, the same way autistic people have special talents normal people don't ; and at least some animals have a special form of genius normal people don't, the same way some autistic savants have special forms of genius." (Grandin 8)
This quote demonstrates that animals and autistic savants think alike and do similar things. Grandin says they are connected because only autistic savants see how smart animals are.
The evidence displays that Grandin wants to show how animals and autistic savant are not that distinct from each other and that they share common qualities.
Grandin explains that she now finally understands the connection between autistic savants and animals.
"I am looking for ways that animals can perceive things humans can't perceive, and to remember highly detailed information we can't remember to make life better for everyone, animals and people alike" (Grandin 8)
The evidence displays that Grandin is attempting to find ways in which animals can do things other people can't do and she is trying to figure out how they do these things.
This quote explains that there are different things that animals excel at just like autistic savants. Animals can usually remember information which autistic savants can do as well.
What is the connection between autism and savants?
Many people believe that all autistic people are autistic savants but in fact that is untrue.
"Approximately only one in 10 individuals with autism have savant syndrome (and approximately 50 percent of savants have an autism spectrum diagnosis)." (McGraw)
This evidence shows that the connection between autism and savants is that only 10 people with autism are savants.
This quote displays that not everyone who is autistic must be savants.
There is said to be a probability that autism and savants have a link to each other but no one has yet to figure out what the direct relation is.
Further studies have identified a potential link between geniuses and people with autism, but have yet to pinpoint the exact genetic variant, nor have there been any reputable theories about why such a connection exists between the two in the first place. (autism academy)
The quote displays that autism has been linked to savants but there is no known reason why.
Furthermore, autism does have a common link to savants but is not yet known why and does not know what exactly autistic savants can do.
