Samples and Surveys
Sampling Error-Error in a statistical analysis arising from the unrepresentativeness of the sample taken.
Voluntary response sampling -Consists of people who choose themselves by responding to a general appeal. Voluntary response samples show bias because people with strong opinions are most likely to respond.

Convenience sampling-One of the main types of non probability sampling. Convenience sample is made up of people who are easy to reach.
Undercoverage-Occurs when some groups in the population are left out of the process of choosing a sample
Non-sampling Error-The deviations of estimates from their true values that are not a function of the sample chosen.
Example-Doing an experiment about what ethnic groups are lactose intolerant but only interviewing asian people.
Wording bias-Bias constructed using language to try and get participants to give a specific response
Example: A survey presenting the presidential candidates as follows. The crooked Hilary and successful Donald

Observation Studies VS Experiments- In experiments investigators provide treatments to experimental units. Some of these units include people, animals, plots of land, etc. After the treatments are provided the investigators proceed to observe the effects of the treatments and the experimental units. One example of an experimental study is the growth of trees when extra water is added to one of the tree samples and the other tree does not get extra water added. In observational studies investigators observe subjects and measure variables of interest without assigning treatments to the subjects. One example of an observational study would be comparing the risk of developing lung cancer between smokers and non smokers.
Lurking Variables/Confounding- Lurking variables are extraneous variables that can occur when they are not considered in the experiment. For example, a researcher studying the effect of diet and exercise on someone's blood pressure might find lurking variables in wether a person smokes or stress levels. These lurking variables can impact the observational study and get results that are not necessarily accurate.
Experimental Units-Physical entity which can be assigned at random to a treatment. Any two experimental units must be capable of receiving different treatments.
Factor-Also known as the independent variable. It is an explanatory variable manipulated by the experimenter. Combination of factor levels are known as treatments.
