Addis Ababa, Ethiopia has their city government giving small loans to families for self help housing construction schemes, either working individually or with others to form a co-operative. A small number of dwelling have been purchase by the government and supplied with clean water and electricity.
Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, has introduced a waste collection system. Rubbish is taken from the streets and recycled by slum dwellers, creating 2,000 jobs and reducing disease.
