He served as the commander of the Union forces. Torwards the end of the war he led the Union to victory. Before he became a offical commander he gave the Union its first major victories by capturing Fort Henry and Fort Donelson. Then, he went on to becoming the 18th President of the United States.

African American soldiers were not given the same rights as whites. White soldiers earned 13 dollars a month with a additional 3 dollars clothing allowance. However, African American soldiers earned 10 dollars a month and had 3 dollarsremoved from their earnings.

Children were impacted by the Civil War as well. Children of freed or escaped slaves often ended up in 'Contraband' camps.
Essentially, diseases and illness spread through the camp because of the poor conditions they were living in .
Children were sent to work in fields for their families in need. They were treated and payed poorly. Children earned at least
1/4 of what an ordinary adult
would receive.
