Where the Gods Fly
Daugther :silhouette:
-
Loosing Chinese culture, and becoming more american
-
-
Very alone while the parents worked, and so ballet was something for her to do
Mother :silhouette:
-
Very busy with her work, and taking care of the dying father
-
No longer in touch with Pearl - they have grown apart - Feels like she lost her daughter to the new culture
Very religious
-
Fame, fortune and material stuff means nothing to her
The gods is what keeps her in touch with her past, and what guides her actions
Contrasts
Then vs. now
Before, the mother thought the best thing for Pearl was to dance, because then she had something to do
Now, she believes the dancing something bad. It has changed her daughter, into something she no longer recognize
-
Cultures
In china, you are part of a group. We hear how the mother dismisses any kind of exceptionality, because it does not fit them
"We do not belong here […] what do we simple Chinese know of these inhuman people with their impassive faces and elegant shoulders?"
But this world, that the mother cannot identify with, have already swallowed up her daughter.
