Prevent destruction of beta lactate ring SO TAKE WITH PENICILLINS

Piperacillin/tazobactam (Zosyn)
Cephalosporins: (cef- or ceph-)
5 generations
Many cause disulfiram reaction w/ alcohol
Carbapenems: (-penem)
Resistant to beta lactamase but should be reserved
Expensive
Given IV (not absorbed by GI)
Can lower levels of valproate (Depakote)-anti seizure drug SO PT is now at risk for seizures
Monobactams
Aztreonam (Azactam)
Only IV/IM SO rotate site
Vancomycin
Reserved for TX of MRSA and C. Diff
Caution for renal failure (give a reduced dose if pt has renal failure)
Only give by IV. -make sure to give it slowly or you'll give pt "red man syndrome"
Only give by IV. -rotate to prevent thrombophlebitis
