Digestion of Dietary Fats
TAG's - 3 FA + 1 glycerol = 1 TAG + 3 water
Lipoproteins
Differentiated on density
Degree of lipid in a lipoprotein affects its density
Lower the density = more lipid it contains relative to protein
CHYLOMICRONS
VERY LOW DENSITY LIPOPROTEINS
carry newly synthesised TAG ( from De Novo Lipogenesis) from liver to tissues
LOW DENSITY LIPOPROTEINS
carry newly synthesised cholesterol (+ small amount of TAG) from the liver to cells of the body
HIGH DENSITY LIPOPROTEINS
collects cholesterol (+ small amount of TAG) from tissues, & brings it back to liver for safe disposal
Lipid Hydrophobic, lipase hydrophilic. TAG needs emulsification
Emulsification increases the surface area where water-soluble lipase can work to digest TAG
Pancreatic lipase :TAG --->monoacyglycerol and fatty acid
Micelles – amphiphilic molecules that help transport the digestion products to the intestinal epithelium
Monoacylglycerol and free FA's now water soluble and absorbed into cells of the intestine
Reformed to triacylglycerides in cell
Aggregate and then combine with cholesterol, phospholipids and proteins forming CHYLOMICRONS
Exocytosis to lymph
TAG in chylomicrons and other lipoproteins are hydrolyzed by lipoprotein lipase (in capillary endothelial cells)
Blood
Membrane bound lipoprotein lipases mainly at adipose tissue or muscles

Chilomicros - Lipoprotein transport particles
Orients ester bonds to surface of micelle=more susceptible to pancreatic lipase.
Need to be degraded into fatty acids for absorption
