POLITICS OF THE PLATE w/ MARIO NESTLE, PhD, MPH
• Personal responsibility or food system issue?
• Nobody can tell you what a healthy diet is - WRONG: Just balance calories, eat fruits and veggies, move more, and enjoy everything you're eating
• If it seems more complicated - that's the effect of the food industry
• Obesity started in the 1980s - not much evidence to prove that people are moving less (from center for disease control and prevention)
• Evidence that people are eating more - calories per person per day has increased 700 cal
• People report 200 cal increase (so somewhere in between)
WHY? Because of deregulation
- Of agriculture: Paid farmers to conserve land - subsidies would depend on how much food was grown
- Of Wall Street: Valued LT & slow return on investments - Now shareholder value movement (started in early 1980s) was pressure to increase immediate returns to investors
- Of food marketing: Possible to market directly to kids; deregulation of health claims/dietary supplements
• People began eating out more (much of it was fast food)
• Cheapness (because of large quantity) allowed fast food to multiply
• Portion size increased
• Poor people who say fruits and veggies are too expensive
• Food companies sell products through marketing
• Health claims on food packaging (because everyone wants to be healthy)
• They said to limit starchy vegetables to 2 try to get people to eat other veggies
• Tomato paste was included as a vegetable
• Food companies spent >$5.6 million to lobby against the proposed rules
-
• Get involved in politics
• Farmers' Markets, urban farming, school meals, neighbourhood access, establish safety net
PYRAMIDS, PLATES, & PAGODAS
• From country to country, so different
• They always change and evolve
-
