Group 1 elements react with oxygen to make oxides and they also form a solution (it is an alkali)-the alkali is the hydroxide of the metal.
Alkali metals have similar chemical properties because when they react their atoms need to lose one electron so that they have a stable electronic structure.

Halogens are non-metals and exist as pairs of atoms, so their symbols have a small 2 next to them.

Opposite trends:
Reactivity increases down group 1 as the outer shell becomes further away from the nucleus so the electron is easily lost

Reactivity decreases down group 7 as the outer shell become further away from the nucleus so the element doesn't attract the electron easily.
