'Parents expect too much of teenagers these days.' What are your views?
Narcissistic parenting :
when parents insist that they are always correct and force unreasonably high expectations upon their children
This affects the child's growth, in some cases causing their hippocampus to shrink and reducing their ability to handle stress and memorize.
This will either make the children grow up to develop the same personality as their parents
ptsd
unrealistically high expectations
be better than the previous sibling (if you have one)
if the sibling had already acheived exceptional results and the child had not been at the same level, the parents will want the child to be the same as the sibling
as the child would already have an older sibling, the parents would expect them not to make the same mistakes as their siblings, and even want the child to be perfect and flawless compared to their siblings
parents want the child to be better than their sibling and be academically better and better in other components like sports, art, music compared to their siblings because they're younger
be accomplished in many other areas at the same time
such as making the child take up piano as an extra subject on top of all the subjects in school and expect her to do well and be accomplished in it
expecting the child to be able to do many sports and to be well rounded in a multitude of various sport activities.
wants us to be stress free and happy ALL THE TIME while getting good results
expecting exceptionally good results while also managing to be stress free and happy is unreasonable because of the unlikely occassion that the child will actually
there is no way studying for exams will not be stressful and the child would not be able to stay happy
being happy all the time would also result in stress because the child would feel obligated to pretend to be happy and cheerful at home
achieve high academic results
for example, constantly receive prizes and be top in class or level. maybe even to the point of expecting things their child cannot manage
might push the child too far and too hard and cause her/him to feel too pressurised and stressed by their parents constant pushing and stressing
go to the most prestigious and best school
Expects child to score academically well and be physically fit
Unrealistic Expectations:
Expecting beyond the child's capability
comparison between the the education system they experienced and the one we have now.
the education system has changed so its not a fair comparison
child might perform worse due to stress and cannot maintain emotional stability
Restricting child from chasing their passion and forcing them to become doctors or lawyers or something
Child does not have freedom to do other things that they are interested in
Child will feel negative if they do not meet expectations
Child cannot think for themselves that about what they want to do and cannot manage time
Child will not be able to accept failures
Competitive Parents
Compares child to other smarter and more talented students
Sends child for many tuition classes, enrichment, supplementary
Stresses out child when he or she fails to perform to expectation
Arguments often occur
Scolding or punishment whenever child does not do well which may lead to depression and low self esteem
busy schedule could lead to not being able to complete homework and therefore the child will be scolded by his or her teacher making him or her more stressed
uses children's ability to boost self esteem
compare everything from attitude to results with everybody better then them
compares child to relatives' child
no confidence
low self esteem
discouraged to do well in studies
Unrealistic Expectations
Studies - Unrealistic Goal Setting
expect teenagers to get exceptional results
force them to take up extra activities such as piano
Expects child to be an all-rounder
Extra Curricular Activities
Might not enjoy the activities
they are mean
Have too much pressure as their parents expectations are set too high
Even if they like the activities, they will gradually start to hate it as it is giving them so much pressure
In future, they might treat their children the same way.
Does not consider whether child is under too much pressure or unable to cope
inability to pursue their own talents and dreams and are pressurized into attaining goals their parents could not achieve
Too stressful
No time to relax
Unecessary pressure
affects the child's mental health
too tense, lesser friends
no one to talk too at home and in school
lonely, no one to understand
Might blank out during an exam/injured in a sport
Cannot do well
Get scolded and give more pressure again
lack of trust on their own child
the child will end up wanting to rebel against
their parents
stalking their child
Controlling parents
Don't allow children to go out with friends, will check group chats with friends , don't respect privacy
achieve grades better than all peers and enter the best schools
pressurize child with extra lessons outside eg.piano, tuition
expect child to excel in everything, high expectations
Reverse: Parents do not expect much of teenagers
Teenagers will not have enough motivation to study hard without pressure
Ample pressure is optimal for child, enough to motivate them but not too much that the child feels excess stress
some parents do not have such high expectations
more accepting of what the child wants, do not pressurize them too much
children may thus be happier and actually perform better
parents may not even care about the child, ignoring them
child may not have proper guidance and a good parental figure in their lives
the child become like bob:(
with no one to stop him or her, he or she may fall in bad company, get into drugs and all the bad stuff
child may feel lonely, unloved, and unwanted, they may become depressed and start keeping to themselves
get into gang fights, bully others, die (in bob's case)
or jugheaaad
parents are more absorbed in their work to pay attention to their children
parent's have little knowledge of how their child is doing, as they usually hire help or leave children at child care centres
expectations are not really
that
high
they only want 6 As
child might not be hardworking
rebellious
For the child's good
child might be lazy
too many tuitions causes unnecessary stress if child can do stuff already
