The Stolen Farthing
the friend got up
went to the room door
opened it a little
peeped in
the child
sittihg on the ground
digging
seeking
industiously amongst the crevices between the boards of the floor
the boy saw the stranger
he disappeared
A father was sitting at dinner with his wife, children and a friend one day.
the door open
a very pale child dressed in snow-white clothes came in
didn't look around
didn't speak
went staight into the next room
when it was12 o'clock
he did the same thing every day
until
the friend asked the father who is him
the father had never seen it
the mother and the children also all saw nothing
he described the child exactly
the mother recognized it
he is her dear child who died a month ago
they took up the boards and found two farthings
which
the child had once recieved from his mom
that it might give them to a poor man
but he thought
he could buy himself a biscuit
kept the farthings
hid them in the openings between the boards
can't stop worrying
came back and look for it
the parents gave the money at once to a poor man
the child was never seen again
