English Language Paper 2: Writers Viewpoint and Perspectives
Assessment objectives
AO3 - identify writers’ ideas and perspectives. Compare the methods used by different writers to convey their ideas
AO4 - critically evaluate texts, giving a personnel opinion about how successful the writing is. Provide detailed evidence from the text to support your opinion
AO2 - explain how writers use language and structure to achieve their purpose and influence readers. Use technical terms to support your analysis of language and structure
AO5 - write clearly and imaginatively, adapting your tone and style for various purposes and audiences. Organise your writing into a clear structure
AO1 - pick out and understand pieces of explicit and implicit information from the texts. Collect and put together information from different texts
AO6 - use a wide variety of sentence structures and vocabulary, so that your writing is clear and purposeful. Write accurately, paying close attention to spelling, punctuation, and grammar
Questions
Question 3 will test the language part of AO2 you need to write about how the writer uses language to achieve effects and influence the reader
Your answer should include quotes and technical terms
You need to focus specifically on words, phrases, language features and techniques
This is a how question so you need to include the techniques the writer has used to achieve this purpose
The last part of the question will change depending on the purpose of the text
Question 4 will test AO3 so you need to identify and compare differant writers attitudes and perspectives and how they are conveyed
You need to give quotes and examples from both sources
You need to identify how the writer has used language and structure to show subtle differences in their attitudes
Make sure that you cover everything mentioned in the bullet points so you need to write about what the writer attitudes are and how they are similar and different
The last part of the question will change depending on the topics in the sources
Question 2 will test both parts of AO1 and it will test your ability to find information and summarise what you find
The question is asking you to summarise information from both texts also you need to add in linking words so you show you are thinking about both texts
The question will ask you about something that the two texts have in common
Pick out bits of implicit and explicit information to support your points and you need to include quotes
Question 5 is a writing task and will test AO5 and AO6. Examiners will be looking to see something that is interesting and accurately written
Question 5 is the only question in section B
The question is worth 40 marks so you need to make sure it is long enough, making a plan will help with this
The task will usually get you to respond to a prompt like an opinion, a scenario or a statement
The question will always give you a specific purpose form and audience so you need to adapt your writing style to fit these points
You need to make sure that your writing is imaginative and clear
You need to focus on technical accuracy as there are a lot of marks awarded for this
You need to structure it so that the most important reason comes first and then link it to another reason. Then you need to include a counter argument and disagree with it. Finally you need to include another reason and link it to your most emotive reason
Question 1 will test the first part of AO1 and you need to find infomation or ideas in the text
You'll get 1 mark for every true statement you find.
You should only select 4 statements and no more
There are 4 true statements and 4 false ones you just need to pick out the 4 true ones.
The facts may be implicit or explicit
Normally the question will say that you need to pick information out from specific parts of the texts so you need to stick to this guideline.
The layout of the exam
Section A is worth 40 marks.
Question 2 is worth 8 marks. Spend around 9 minutes on this question
Question 3 is worth 12 marks. Spend around 14 minutes on this question
Question 1 is worth 4 marks. Spend around 4 minutes on this question
Question 4 is worth 16 marks. spend around 18 minutes on this question
Section B is worth 40 marks
Question 5 is worth 40 marks. Spend around 45 minutes on this question
